Ready to Take Kindergarten by Storm

Canaan started school today. He was, "Mostly excited, but a little bit nervous, too!" Matthew had a hard time dealing with it this morning. So much so, that he refused to get dressed! I threatened to take him to school in his firetruck pajamas and he still wouldn't cooperate. I promised to take him to playgroup today, and they were meeting at Dunkin' Donuts, and he still screamed and cried! I eventually got his clothes on him and buckled him into the van.

Then Canaan obliged me and posed for a couple photos in front of the house, after giving me the third degree on WHY I needed pictures of him this morning. All the way to school I reminded him to be quiet when the teacher was talking, make sure to ask if he needs to use the bathroom, and to remember everything that happens because I'll want to know ALL about it when I pick him up this afternoon.

He ran into the school, rolling his backpack behind him. I trudged behind carrying three bags of the less exciting school supplies--zipper bags, wipes, tissues, etc. I talked him into posing for one last picture in front of his classroom door. His teacher greeted us and had Canaan take his seat; the few other children already there were coloring pictures of a school bus. He gave me a kiss and then asked where his crayons were packed into his backpack and told Matty he'd see him after school. If I didn't have to stop by the office and request a blank med form so Canaan can have permission to carry his inhaler to school, I might have given in and shed a tear or two.

We never did find the Dunkin' Donuts our playgroup was supposed to meet at. So, instead I took Matty to Krispy Kreme and let him pick out donuts for himself and Canaan. Matthew's donut is long gone, but when Canaan gets home this afternoon, he'll have a chocolate iced sprinkle donut waiting to congratulate him on his first day.

27 Weeks

Just a couple quick pics of me and Gracie.

Flying Monkey!

Yesterday I was trying to take advantage of the boys playing upstairs so nicely. It wasn't exactly quiet, but they sounded like they were having fun and getting along. I was able to wash the dishes, pick up the living room, and then it happened. I was at the bottom of the stairs switching the laundry when I heard it. THUMP! Wail. "MO-OM! Matty got HU-URT! He jumped off the top of his bed!" He has a locomotive-shaped toddler bed, with a canopy over the "cab" part. I sighed and started heaving my 6-months-pregnant body up the stairs to investigate. When I got upstairs, Matty was holding his neck and crying. Then Canaan added, "He was holding the cord for the blinds when he jumped and I think it hit him." As best I can figure, he stood on top of his bed, held onto the cord for the blinds and jumped. I think the jump pulled the cord from his hand and it whipped back and caught him around the neck and gave him a pretty good rope burn. It's a good thing he's OK or I'd have wrung his neck! Now to figure out how to put the cord up high enough that it's out of reach, even from my climbing, flying monkey!

You can see the rope burn doesn't seem to be bothering him today. He and Canaan proudly show off their new Star Wars Clone Wars T-shirts.

NC Evenings

This is a recent sunset I snapped from our backyard.

Vacation

We took the boys to Williamsburg, VA earlier this month. Our first stop was Colonial Williamsburg, where Aaron and I first met. The boys got to play a lawn game that involved knocking a wooden hoop on one side with a wooden stick to start it rolling. Then you chase after it, continuing to whack it on one side to keep it rolling. To put it kindly, Canaan is not the most coordinated child, but he excelled at this game. Poor kid! He born 400 years too late!

We took them to the stocks and locked them up. Matty was too short, so Aaron had to hold him up. We explained that it was an old-fashioned time out. I asked if they'd like us to build one of these in our backyard for their naughty moments--that idea didn't go over so well!

The next day we went to Busch Gardens. Unfortunately, we weren't able to take any pictures there. We thought we'd lost our camera, but thankfully found it when we got back home. The boys really enjoyed Busch Gardens. Canaan is still talking about the rides he went on and is busy planning his next theme park visit--to Disney World!

Arts & Crafts Day

I woke up with a sore throat and headache today and I'm just dragging.  I don't have the energy to go to the park or "go somewhere fun" as Canaan begs on a daily basis.  So, I got out the washable paints, glue, googlie eyes, and buttons.  Sometimes we can have fun even if we stay at home.  Bonus--they were surprisingly neat with all their crafty stuff and there was very little to clean up!
